Produce Smoothies for the Win
A healthful diet must have
Thinking of embarking on a juice cleanse or detox this year? Instead, consider incorporating smoothies into your diet and let us tell you why. Juicing fresh fruits and vegetables is undoubtedly a great way to add potent nutrition to your everyday diet. But unfortunately, juice (even cold pressed & fresh) lacks the fiber and bulk that will keep you feeling full throughout the day. Not to mention it’s quite labor intensive to do on your own. Think about it – after investing in a juicer, you must purchase large quantities of produce and be prepared to clean up the large quantities of pulp that is discarded throughout the process!
Smoothies, when done right, are the perfect vehicle to quickly add fruits and vegetables along with all their important micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) while also including fiber and hydration.
- They’re quick to make and even quicker to clean up
- They’re an easy way to use up fresh or frozen produce
- They’re a top notch way to sneak a serving of vegetables into the diet
- They’re a great way to incorporate protein and other supplements
- They can be customized for all taste preferences!
When creating your own smoothie blend, keep these tips in mind. Start with 1 cup of liquid. This could be milk of choice, water, 100% fruit juice, coconut water, or even cooled coffee or tea! Then pick your produce. Begin by adding at least 1 cup, but no more than 2 cups of your favorite fruits and vegetables! We suggest starting with ½ cup of each and remember the more you add, the thicker the smoothie will be, so adjust to your liking. Next, make it interesting with flavor boosters from ginger, turmeric, nuts or cocoa nibs, protein powder or even fresh herbs! Smoothies can err on the carby side but you can always add hemp seeds, chia or flax to balance satiety power with plant based fats. Lastly, if you take a sip and feel it needs a bit of sweetness, add half an over ripe banana, dates or dried fruit before going for the sugar, maple syrup or honey!
