Fighting Childhood Obesity: Dole Food Company, Nestle Usa, The Wnba Los Angeles Sparks & Kaiser Permanente Join Our Team
Los Angeles, CA - May 19, 2008
City Scholars Foundation
Aiming to combat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity in America (more than 25% of school-age children are overweight in Los Angeles County alone), Dole Food Company ($10,000), Nestle USA ($10,000), the WNBA Los Angeles SPARKS (Staples Center Celebration Host) and Kaiser Permanente ($5,000) have teamed up to help us expand our AfterSchool Leadership Academy's Health & Wellness Initiative.
As an innovative, tuition-free, "training through action" program, this annual initiative involves our City Scholars AfterSchool Network® (CSAN), member agencies with an interactive Health & Wellness Forum (May 21) and a special 90-Day "follow up" Health & Wellness Curriculum Challenge (May 21- August 28) that together are designed to give them the tools they need and challenge them to develop, implement and evaluate creative and cost-effective ways to help more than 10,000 inner-city kids in the greater Los Angeles community eat better, exercise more and have fun making healthy living a way of life for themselves and their families.
Best of all, we look forward to celebrating their efforts and the support of our Health & Wellness Partners at a special half-time celebration to be hosted by the WNBA Los Angeles SPARKS at Staples Center on August 28 before an estimated crowd of over 7,500 fans!
