Colombia

Colombia is the fourth largest country in South America. The terrain ranges from low-lying coastal regions to the Andean plateau at 18700 Feet or 5700m and tropical rainforest. Bananas are grown between the mountains and the sea. Locals do not eat much our cavendish bananas, they prefer plantains as a side dish, or Manzanos.

Urabá

The largest banana-growing region in Colombia. The climate is hot and very rainy, giving the bananas all the water they need. They are transported down river to the sea in barges and loaded on to the ships by crane.

Climate

Hot and humid –the perfect conditions for bananas! In spite of its location on the Atlantic coast, Colombia has a low hurricane risk compared with the nations of Central America. It is more susceptible to the drought conditions of La Niña than the floods associated with El Niño.
