Innovative Waste Reduction

Anyone who wants to act in a sustainable way, will inevitably have to deal with the challenges of waste. Our world suffers from too much plastic waste. Reducing that concerns us all. As a global company, we consider it an absolute necessity to find ways to reduce waste now and in the future. Dole has therefore set itself the goal of making all tropical fruit packaging materials recyclable or compostable by 2025.

We are already doing this: our approach is “reduce, reuse and recycle”. On our banana plantations, the plastic bags and covers that protect the banana stalks from insects and other harmful influences are reused or recycled. Smart recycling: together with Recyplast, which was co-founded by Dole, plastic waste is recycled to create corner boards used to maintain pallets during transport. In addition to farms, plastic waste is also recycled by consumers. Our Diversified division is also experimenting with more sustainable packaging alternatives and we use salad waste from vegetable processing to produce compost.
