Resolve to Live Longer this Year
Longevity with fruits and vegetables
Every year millions of people make New Year’s resolutions, many related to health and wellness, exercise, and weight loss – all made with intentions to help us live longer and happier lives. A recent study reinforces how including fruits and vegetables as part of our annual dietary promise may contribute to longevity.
The study, published in the Journal of Internal Medicine, examined how an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, which includes eating high amounts of fruits and vegetables, influenced mortality in over 68,000 Swedish men and women. Diets were assessed using the Anti-Inflammatory Diet Index (AIDI), a measurement of inflammation relative to foods consumed. Over the 16-year follow-up, there were just over 16,000 deaths due to cardiovascular disease or cancer. They found that participants who were highest on the AIDI were between 13-20% lower risk of mortality, including from cardiovascular disease and cancer.
