Pineapple: A talented all-rounder

Pineapple: A talented all-rounder

Juicy, sweet and versatile! Pineapple is a tasty tropical treat that comes in several variants. It provides fruit lovers with vitamins, minerals, fibre and a very special enzyme. The scientific name for the fruit, Ananas comosus, is based on a Tupi word nana, meaning “excellent fruit”. With Dole, fans of the pineapple can enjoy its delicious taste all year round.

Specially chosen – finding the perfect pineapple

No more waiting – Dole pineapples in your supermarket are ready to eat for immediate fruit enjoyment. This is because pineapples are harvested when they are completely ripe and, unlike bananas, do not continue to ripen after they are picked. You can tell if a pineapple is ripe by squeezing it gently, it should give slightly. By the way, the outer colour of the pineapple does not tell you anything about how ripe the fruit is. Individual pineapples can range in colour from green to yellow. Tip: Take a look at the bulges in the individual scales. The smoother the skin, the riper the fruit. When the pineapple is sliced, the prickly beauty shows its best side thanks to its yellow and juicy flesh. The area close to the base of the pineapple tastes sweeter because the fruit ripens from the bottom to the top.

Powerful nutrients for digestion and the immune system

Fresh pineapple is just what you need if you want to boost your defences. This aromatic exotic fruit is abundant in vitamin C, whose anti-oxidant properties support our immune system. It also helps our bodies to absorb the iron in our food. The “Tropical Gold” variety provides us with as much as three times the amount of vitamin C provided by normal pineapples. Even one slice delivers our daily requirement of vitamin C.The fibre content of pineapple should not be underestimated either. These useful nutrients help to boost digestion and metabolism and make us feel full for longer. And it’s hardly a surprise – the multi-talented pineapple does not even stint when it comes to important minerals and trace elements. Calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, zinc, and copper are needed for numerous metabolic processes in the body and are therefore vital for bones, the nervous system and other functions.

Strong enzyme support

Enzymes are absolutely essential! We could not exist without them, as digestion, growth, breathing and many other processes would not function in their absence. Our little wonder fruit also hits the jackpot here as it is particularly rich in the enzyme bromelain, which breaks down proteins and thus helps us to digest our food. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps the body to fight infection. Bromelain has therefore long been a consideration in cancer research. And if pineapple’s many benefits are not enough: this delicious fruit is also low in calories and enhances both cold dishes, like salads, and warm meat-based dishes or fruit soups.

Here’s wishing you lots of pine-tastic enjoyment!
