Phenology, or nature’s calendar, refers to the seasonality and life cycle of plants and animals. Phenology is what helps us guide what to grow season after season so we can yield the best of the crops. Not surprising is the ever-changing climate of the Earth. But, thanks to historical data insinuating some stabilization, we can predict when best to prepare for the next growing season ahead.

And, with a quick blink of an eye, fall will be here before you know it. Depending on the climate of where you live, now may be the perfect time to begin your fall garden. Doubtful of a fall garden? While it may not be the more popular growing season, fall is actually a perfect opportunity to grow produce from the Brassica family. Plus, the abundance a fall garden can yield can certainly be surprising due to cooler temperatures, making the effort incredibly worthwhile.

Beets, broccoli, chard, radish, carrots, and winter squash are among some of the wonderful late fall harvest vegetables that will help keep you full all winter long. Plus, by having a late harvest you are introducing different nutrients into the soil that will naturally fertilize the soil, which by default is putting you one step ahead in preparing for your spring garden.

Maybe these fall garden produce suggestions do not have your attention… yet! While they may not be the most popular produce choices, they are definitely nutritious and can be equally delicious. The underdog here is definitely beets as they are full of many phytonutrients and impressively known for beating hypertension. Beets can be roasted as a savory side dish or made into a sweet smoothie with frozen berries from your spring harvest. Chard on the other hand has a built in defense against chronic disease with its own powerhouse properties, making it another versatile green to add to Dole salads no matter which season you are in.

So, what are you waiting for? The time to plant your fall garden is now!
