Want a Healthier Heart?
Grab 8 Strawberries Every Day
Strawberries aren’t just delicious; they might also be one of the simplest and tastiest ways to improve your heart health. A recent study presented at Nutrition 2024, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, revealed that eating strawberries daily could significantly lower the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and improve blood vessel function.
Over four weeks, researchers examined the effects of eating strawberries on cardiovascular health and glucose control. A total of 68 adults consumed strawberries daily, and their blood vessel function was measured using a test called flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Results showed that eating strawberries improved FMD, a key indicator of heart health, and reduced the risk of CVD by up to eight times compared to when strawberries were not consumed.
According to Dr. Britt Burton-Freeman, one of the study’s co-authors, “A diet low in fruit is among the top three risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Adding as little as one cup of strawberries a day to your diet may show beneficial effects on your cardiovascular health.”
Strawberries are more than just a tasty snack.
One serving of eight strawberries (about one cup) provides:
- 100% of your daily recommended vitamin C
- A rich source of antioxidants and bioactive compounds
- Fiber to support digestion and healthy blood sugar levels
- Natural sweetness with low calories—making them a guilt-free indulgence
One of the best things about strawberries is their versatility.
Here are some simple ways to incorporate them into your daily routine:
- Breakfast Boost: Top your oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal with sliced strawberries for a sweet and nutritious start to your day.
- Snack Time: Keep a bowl of strawberries on hand for an easy, grab-and-go snack. Pair them with nuts or a dollop of nut butter for added protein.
- Lunch or Dinner: Add sliced strawberries to a spinach salad with walnuts and goat cheese for a refreshing twist.
- Dessert: Dip strawberries in dark chocolate for a heart-healthy treat or blend them into a smoothie with bananas and almond milk.
Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, but small lifestyle changes can have a big impact. Strawberries are not only delicious but also accessible year-round and loved by kids and adults alike. By simply adding one cup of strawberries to your daily diet, you can take an easy and proactive step toward protecting your heart and overall health.
