'Tis the Season to Stay Fit!
It's never too late to get the muscle building benefits
Exercising through the holidays can be challenging, especially when unexpected gatherings, snow storms, busy schedules or maybe feeling just plain old comes into play! But don’t let that stop you! Getting your heart rate up for just 15 minutes can have enormous health benefits. Throughout a season where holiday shopping can feel like an Olympic sport, take advantage of the opportunity to increase your heart rate, no matter your age.
According to a study out of University of Birmingham in England, it’s never too late to start. Published in Frontiers in Physiology, their research shows that older adults and master athletes over 65 years old had the same ability to increase muscle. Meaning that the average person can build muscle after exercise just as well as lifelong athletes can!
Having a workout routine at any age reaps major benefits. Older adults especially benefit from improved balance and coordination, improved sleep and mood, and chronic disease prevention. But, if running around the outlet mall is the only foreseeable exercise in sight- take an extra lap for your fitness!
