The Banana Hack Everyone Needs to Know

When it comes to natural, nutrient-packed ingredients, bananas are a shining star. Their creamy texture, mild sweetness, and rich nutrient profile make them a staple in kitchens worldwide. But did you know bananas can also serve as an effective thickening agent too?

Research published in Nutrition in Clinical Practice suggests that bananas can be an effective and natural thickener for liquids, particularly for individuals with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). This study investigated using banana puree to thicken breast milk and formula for infants with dysphagia. The findings revealed that banana puree could, indeed, achieve various thickness levels (as per the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative, or IDDSI) while maintaining a healthy nutritional balance.

Bananas’ natural consistency and carbohydrate content make them ideal for thickening without artificial additives. They’re also rich in potassium, vitamin B6, and fiber, supporting overall health. However, moderation is key for infants. The study highlighted the importance of limiting banana puree to 15% of the feeding volume to avoid excessive potassium intake while maintaining proper nutrition.

The nice thing is, this research is relevant for older adults too.  Those with dysphagia can benefit from using bananas as a natural thickener in soups, smoothies, and other liquids.
