Kiddies Get a Boost with Blueberries TOO!
Flavonoids May Improve Reaction Time in Kids
The health benefits of blueberries are already impressive. They support bone health, lower blood pressure, and even ease PTSD symptoms in adults. Now, exciting new research shows that these tiny berries may give kids’ brains a boost too.
Study Shows Faster Reaction Time
A 2017, study published in Food & Function explored the cognitive effects of blueberries in children aged 7 to 10. In a double-blind, cross-over trial, 21 children were given either 30 grams of freeze-dried wild blueberry powder or a placebo. Three hours later, they completed a computerized task known as the Modified Attention Network Task (MANT)—a game-like test that became increasingly challenging as it progressed.
The results? Children who consumed the blueberry powder completed the tasks 9% faster than those who took the placebo.
Flavonoids for Focus
Researchers credit this improvement to flavonoids—natural antioxidants found in blueberries, as well as tea, coffee, and dark chocolate. Flavonoids are increasingly recognized for their role in enhancing cognitive performance across all age groups. This study adds to growing evidence that these compounds can help sharpen attention and improve reaction time—even in young children.
