A spate of provocative books about America's weight problem and food industry have helped focus the nation's attention on the growing obesity crisis. Among them: Eric Schlosser's
Fast Food Nation (2000), Marion Nestle's
Food Politics (2002), Greg Critser's
Fatland (2003) and Kelly Brownell's
Food Fight (2003).
My favorite among these is Greg Critser's
Fatland: How America Became the Fattest People In the World (Houghton Mifflin). If you haven't read it, order the new paperback edition coming out in January, with a new preface that enlists parents as the most powerful weapon against childhood obesity. Here's the article that started it all for Critser -- a humorous and heart-warming look at the challenges of weight loss from a male perspective.
