Chicago researchers monitored subjects who sprinkled their food with calorie-free powders that smelled like high-flavor foods (including cocoa, banana and raspberry, plus savory flavors like taco, cheddar and horseradish). Test subjects lost an average of 5.6 pounds a month without making other changes in their diet, while a control group on a standard diet actually gained weight.
