Programs

Environmental stewardship is an integral part of Dole's concept of "quality", embodied in our label. We believe a quality product is produced in a quality way and we strive to integrate consideration for the environment into everything we do. We invest in environmental protection - in making real improvements in our people, our facilities and our operations.

The framework that guides Dole's production operations' environmental management programs contains elements endorsed as effective by environmental and standard-setting organizations, such as the International Organization for Standards (ISO) and other international organizations.

In July 1998, Dole's banana operations in Costa Rica became the first banana exporter and the first agricultural producer in the world to become certified to the environmental management system requirements of ISO 14001. Dole's other fresh fruit and flower divisions in Latin America and Asia were certified to the ISO 14001 standard by the end of 2000.

Elements of Dole's environmental programs include management commitment; operating policies that go beyond compliance (stressing pollution prevention, waste minimization and risk reduction); a company-wide organization of professionals; specially developed technical guidance and training; regular self-assessment and goal setting; and a dedication to continuous improvement.
