1900
The territory of Hawaii is established and Sanford Dole, cousin of James Dole, is appointed first Governor of the new territory.

1901
James Dole begins growing pineapple on 60 acres on Wahiawa, north of Oahu. [Click here to learn how to visit the Dole Plantation in Wahiawa]

Dole's company becomes Hawaiian Pineapple Company and is incorporated in this year. James Dole becomes known as "The Pineapple King," because he was able to successfully grow and harvest this crop that had failed so many others. His company puts canned pineapple in every grocery store in the country and makes the name "Hawaiian" almost synonymous with "pineapple."

Dole makes his famous quality pledge - "We have built this company on quality, quality, and quality."

James Dole is the first to offer recipes in ladies' magazines to entice consumers to buy pineapple.
 
1903
Dole packs 1,893 cases of canned pineapple and is on his way to establishing one of the major brand names in the food industry, as recognizable as any household food brand in the world today.

1905
Castle & Cooke organizes the Sugar Factors Company, Ltd., to buy, sell, transport, and arrange for refining Hawaii's sugars.

1907
Dole moves pineapple cannery to Honolulu and places ads in U.S. magazines to promote pineapple. (This was one of the first nationwide consumer ad campaigns in America.)

1911
A Dole engineer, Henry Ginaca, invents a machine that peels, cores and cuts pineapple at the speed of 80 to 100 pineapples per minute.

1915
Hawaiian Pineapple Company becomes Hawaii's second largest industry.

1921
By this year, Hawaiian Pineapple Company owns 29 patents covering machines and processes in the pineapple industry, which represent virtually all of the specialized pineapple canning machinery, most of which had been developed by employees of the Company.

1922
James Dole purchases the Island of Lana'i.

1926
